From swimming student to Centre Leader, meaningful careers begin at the Y.
Simone Morgan’s connection to the Port Lincoln Leisure Centre began long before she became a staff member. Growing up in Port Lincoln, many of her childhood memories were shaped at the pool, from birthday parties to swimming training and competitions.
As a committed squad swimmer from age 12, Simone spent years in the water and developed a strong respect for the lifeguards who kept the centre safe. Determined to join them, she completed her qualifications at age 15 so she could begin work as soon as she could.
“Through the hours of lifeguarding I did around school, I was able to rack up enough cash to buy my very own car on my 17th birthday. I was stoked because this meant I could tear up the beaches whenever I wanted. From then on, I often came to work from a morning surf mish, hair still salty and I found many likeminded coworkers.”

Starting as a lifeguard while still at high school, Simone quickly built confidence and strong communication skills. Aquatics Director, Susan Grigg recognised Simone’s potential early and encouraged her to complete her swim instructor qualification. Although unsure at first about teaching young children, Simone soon found a new passion in helping students build water safety skills and confidence.
“Swim instructing became my new favourite job, I just loved it. No two shifts were the same. As I was teaching the kids how to swim, they were teaching me emotional maturity, effective communication and how to set boundaries and routines.”

She later expanded her training to include infant and baby classes as well.
Susan recalls, “She had been swimming with the swim club since she was 12 so I knew she had the knowledge and swimming ability. Add this to her bubbly nature and caring personality, I knew she would be a great swim teacher.”

After finishing school and travelling, Simone returned to Port Lincoln and stepped into a Duty Manager role, further strengthening her leadership skills. Today, she works across multiple areas of the centre, including the gym programs and group fitness classes in AquaFit and functional training.
Simone’s journey reflects the opportunities available at YMCA South Australia. From entry-level roles to leadership pathways, the Y supports staff to gain qualifications, build confidence and grow their careers, all while staying connected to their community.

Her story shows how attending a first swimming lesson at the Y can evolve into a meaningful and rewarding career, giving back to the local community where she lives.
“I’d love to thank YMCA Port Lincoln for investing in me as not just a worker but a valued member of the community.”
